Our Story

Brett’s Blankets began in 2004 in memory of Brett Hunter Staples, who passed away at three months old from SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). The first holiday season after Brett’s passing, family and friends of the Staples family gathered together to channel their grief into love by making hand-made fleece blankets for children in the community who needed the warm embrace.

For years following Brett’s passing, loved ones continued to gather around the holidays to make dozens of blankets each year. As time went on, more and more people learned about Brett’s Blankets, and eventually people from all over Texas began making blankets year around. The ease of making fleece blankets, the gathering of friends to do acts of kindness, and the feel-good emotion of creating a blanket for someone in need quickly became popular amongst friends, churches, schools, and community groups.

Since 2004, Brett’s Blankets have comforted thousands of children and elderly in the US, Mexico, and eastern Europe. Beneficiaries of these blankets are children who have been traumatized, orphaned, or in hospital, and the elderly who are isolated and alone.

Since 2019, Brett’s Blankets is a 501(c)3 registered nonprofit in the United States. We are now on the journey to empower many more people across the United States and the world to make blankets with love for those in their communities who truly need the physical and emotional comfort of a blanket.
